Sydney commuters 'tap' with credit cards

Sydney commuters can now 'tap on' for single trips using their phones, tablets and smartwatches instead of Opal cards when travelling on the city's ferries and Light Rail.

The "contactless payment scheme" came into play on Monday and is expected to be rolled out to trains before the end of the year, said NSW Transport Minister Andrew Constance.

Commuters who have linked their Visa, Mastercard or American Express card to a mobile device can travel for the cost of a single trip, but they will not get the caps and discounts that come with the Opal card.

Mr Constance said the technology is targeted at people looking for convenience but it's not a replacement for the Opal system.

"It compliments the foundation of Opal," he told reporters in Sydney on Monday.

"(It) is designed to be convenient for tourists and for those who might have left their Opal card at home."

The technology was first trialled on the Manly to Circular Quay ferry last July and has since been introduced on all Sydney ferries and Inner West Light Rail following "overwhelming" positive feedback from the public, Mr Constance said.

As well as the new tap-on technology, ferries commuters on the Circular Quay to Manly trip can now enjoy a cold beer or cider on afternoon and evening journeys.

Sydney Harbour Ferries managing director Martin Kearney said the move to sell alcohol brings Sydney in line with ferry services around the world and Australia.

"We have listened to what our customers want and believe the bar service on Manly ferries adds an enjoyable dimension to the journey," Mr Kearney said in a statement on Monday.

Food and 4 Pines beers will be available from 4pm to 8pm.
