Is this the longest queue of buses you have ever seen? Sydney commuters face traffic nightmare on Harbour Bridge due to CBD roadwork

A seemingly endless queue of buses is at a standstill on Sydney Harbour Bridge due to roadwork in the CBD, with reports some commuters have been forced to wait up to three hours.

The Transport Management Centre has attributed the hold up to roadwork in the CBD with buses that normally use George Street being diverted via King and Elizabeth Streets via Castlereagh Street and buses using temporary bus stops.

Motorists are also experiencing delays southbound over the bridge.

One 9NEWS viewer sitting on a bus in the middle of the chaos has expressed his frustration at the decision to conduct roadworks this week as many Sydneysiders return to work for the first time since the Christmas and New Year break.

He claimed he had been on the bus for over an hour.

The issue has been worsened by a truck breakdown in the Harbour Tunnel, a motorcycle breakdown in Milson's Point and a two-car accident on the Warringah Freeway approaching the bridge.

Passengers can use their bus tickets on trains between Chatswood and the city as an alternative.

Anyone travelling into the city is advised to allow additional travel time.
