Sydney woman charged with defrauding non profit organisation of nearly $150k

A 72-year-old Sydney woman has been charged with allegedly defrauding the non-for profit organisation she worked for of nearly $150,000.

Police said the organisation's finance team first noticed discrepancies in their banking accounts in September last year, and hired a private forensic accounting investigator to review suspicious accounts.

The investigator highlighted a total of $148,984.05 worth of discrepancies between December 2007 and August 2014.

A long-term employee who worked as a client accounts officer was identified as a potential suspect and officers from Surry Hills Local Area Command were notified and began an investigation.

Yesterday a 72-year-old woman attended Surry Hills Police Station where she was arrested and charged with stealing property as a clerk/servant greater than $15,000.

She was given conditional bail to appear at the Downing Centre Local Court on October 22.
