Man arrested after Sydney Cenotaph is vandalised

A man has been charged after allegedly damaging the Martin Place Cenotaph in Sydney overnight.

Just before 9.30pm last nigh, CCTV cameras captured a man defacing the statue.

The man is alleged to have removed flowers from a wreath and placed them in the soldier’s hands, placed a cigarette lighter in his left arm and a cigarette on the rifle, and poured beer on his feet before walking away.

The 43-year-old man was arrested by officers from the Police Transport and Public Safety Command near Castlereagh Street.

He was taken to Day Street Police Station and charged with commit offensive act in, on war memorial/interment site, and wilfully damage or deface any protected place.

The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court on Wednesday, September 5, 2018.
