Sydney lit up red to celebrate Year of the Monkey

It's out with the goat and in with the monkey as Sydney celebrates the Lunar New Year.

The Sydney Opera House has been lit up red to mark the holiday, celebrated across China and Southeast Asia.

"We are proud to host the biggest Lunar New Year celebration outside of Asia, and it was an honour to flick the switch to turn Sydney's most recognised building red," Premier Mike Baird said on Sunday night.

It's the fourth time the Opera House has been lit up and is symbolic of the strong relationship between NSW and China, Multiculturalism Minister John Ajaka said.

"I was born in the Year of the Monkey so this year will be particularly special for me," Mr Ajaka said.

"I wish everyone a happy, safe and rewarding Year of the Monkey."
