Sydney carer nurses ill kangaroo joey sent to vet in grocery bag

A Sydney wildlife carer is trying to nurse a very ill kangaroo joey back to health, after a shooter who killed its mother took it to a vet in a grocery bag.

The baby eastern grey kangaroo was taken in by the hunter for about a week before being taken to a vet "as they thought she might die", carer Adrina Selles wrote on Facebook.

"When I received her two days ago she weighed just 1020g, she was very dehydrated, very underweight, has what looks like friction burns on her feet and tail and had developed diarrhoea," Ms Selles wrote in a post last Monday.

"We have now made it through two nights and things are looking just a little brighter but we still have a long way to go. She still may die."

The joey had suffered friction burns because the grocery bag was too rough for her skin, the Manly Daily reported.

Ms Selles urged people to contact their local wildlife agencies if they find any injured or sick native animals, and not to take them in themselves.

"This situation is so distressing for both the animal and the carer. It could have been avoided... and maybe don't shoot the wildlife in the first place!" she wrote.
