Sydney Archbishop back to work

Archbishop of Sydney Anthony Fisher will return to work after a four-month stint in a rehabilitation centre for an autoimmune condition that left him paralysed.

The 55-year-old was diagnosed with Guillain-Barre syndrome after he fell ill just before Christmas.

The rare autoimmune disease can make a person almost totally paralysed as the body's immune system attacks the nerves, with muscles unable to respond to the brain's commands.

"It was with mixed feelings that I left Mt Wilga rehabilitation hospital yesterday to return to my home at St Mary's Cathedral. However I'm looking forward to gradually settling back into work and will miss the wonderful staff at Mt Wilga who cared for me so kindly," Archbishop Fisher said in a Facebook post on Thursday.
