Sydney likes to boast about its spectacular harbour but the city may not be bragging about being voted the 11th most expensive destination in the world for a quick getaway.

For a cheap escape, it's Hanoi in Vietnam that's claimed the No.1 spot as the best-value destination in the world, according to the latest study by TripAdvisor released on Wednesday.

The TripIndex Cities list compared the cost of a three-night break for two people during June to August in 40 key tourist cities around the world, taking in the cost of a four-star hotel for three nights, a visit to three attractions, lunch each day, a taxi to and from dinner each day, plus the cost of dinner itself.

In Sydney, which was just outside the Top 10 table after Toronto, Dubai and Singapore, a three-night break in Sydney will cost you about $1873.
