Abusive NSW tutor guilty, mother relieved

A Sydney mother whose child was sexually assaulted by an elderly maths tutor has gasped in relief on hearing the verdict against the abuser.

"Guilty," the jury foreman said to the third charge, the same verdict returned on a further eight charges laid against Quy Huy Hoang, 67.

Hoang did not react as the findings of guilt stacked up in Sydney's District Court on Friday.

The mother of one victim cried out, relieved at the result that followed a two-month trial and more than a week of deliberations.

But the long-running matter is not finished yet.

Hoang was charged with 12 offences and has pleaded not guilty.

After finding him guilty of nine charges and not guilty of two others, the jury will further deliberate next Wednesday on the remaining charge.

Before the verdict the mother had been hoping for, the jury found Hoang on Friday not guilty of two charges relating to allegations he had committed an act of indecency on a seven-year-old student in 2007 to 2008.

The nine charges on which Hoang was found guilty relate to the sexual abuse of four girls, aged between three and eight, and range from indecent assault to sexual intercourse.

The abuse occurred in their family homes between 2011 and 2014.

Crown prosecutor Paul Leask told the court during the trial that Hoang had used his standing in the Vietnamese community to deceive parents into letting him into their homes.

"He was living a double life," Mr Leask said.

"He was two men. One seen, one trusted; the other ... with an entirely different agenda."

Hoang transferred K-Y Jelly into small Blistex containers and carried it to class in his briefcase, Mr Leask said.

The trusted tutor brought lubricant to his lessons for "no other purpose but sexual intercourse", he said.

The matter will return to court next week.
