A man is recovering in hospital after he was allegedly stabbed in the face and neck during an unprovoked attack at a western Sydney railway station.

The 25-year-old was waiting at Werrington Railway Station with a 16-year-old girl late on Tuesday night when another man allegedly threatened them with a knife.

Police say the man stabbed the 25-year-old in the face and neck before running away.
