Subway Australia changes to cage-free eggs

Thousands of hens in Australia will live a freer life, after a fast-food chain announced that its stores will now serve cage-free eggs.

RSPCA Australia hopes Subway's decision will prompt other Australian businesses and companies to follow its lead and commit to using cage-free eggs.

Subway's decision means the 5.5 million eggs sold each year at its stores will be cage free, letting hens live and behave naturally within their environment, RSPCA said on Wednesday.

Up to 11 million hens are confined to cages for the purpose of egg production across Australia, according to RSPCA.
