A man has been charged after police seized a submachine gun during a car search on the NSW Central Coast.

Police found a working MP40 submachine gun with a missing barrel, 60 rounds of ammunition and a firearm magazine in a bag in the car near The Entrance on Sunday night.

A 40-year-old passenger was charged with possessing a prohibited firearm and ammunition and refused bail to appear at Wyong Local Court on Monday, police said.
