Online, mobile and telephone banking services run by St George bank should be restored on Monday evening, after thousands of customers were affected over the long weekend.

Branches were closed in NSW, Queensland, South Australia and the ACT this Labour Day Monday but the bank said people could access their funds through ATM and EFTPOS services as well as their credit card.

An apology has been issued and St George says it will waive fees and charges for those needing emergency funds through their credit card cash advance facility.

Several branches will open at 8am Monday.

Customers took to social media to voice their frustration and anger, after being denied the ability to pay for purchases for almost 24 hours.

"Transactions that have been undertaken over the weekend should be processed overnight or (Tuesday)," a St George spokeswoman said.
