A man who was allegedly speeding at 170km/h in northern NSW before he crashed his car had two children as passengers and also returned a breath test of 0.107, police allege.

Officers had registered the car was speeding on the Pacific Highway at Sleepy Hollow, south of Tweed heads, at about 3pm on Saturday.

When they gave chase they came across the car's wreckage after it had apparently collided with a fence on the median strip.

The 35-year-old driver, from Queensland, was uninjured.

His passengers - a woman, a 10-year-old girl and a boy, seven, were also unhurt.

He's been granted bail to appear in Tweed Heads Local Court on July 27, charged with mid range drink-driving and exceeding the speed limit by more than 45km/h.
