Police charge Spedding over child sex

Whitegoods repairman William Spedding has been charged with a series of alleged child sex offences dating back to the 1980s.

Spedding was arrested by homicide detectives at his Bonny Hills home on the NSW mid-north coast on Wednesday afternoon.

Following almost six hours at Port Macquarie Police Station, detectives charged him with five counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10 years old.

The 63-year-old was also charged with two counts of common assault.

Spedding was refused bail and will appear in Port Macquarie Local Court on Thursday.

The charges relate to the alleged sexual assault of two girls, aged three and six, in 1987 in Campbelltown in Sydney's southwest.

Homicide detectives attached to Strike Force Rosann stressed the arrest was not related to the investigation into toddler William Tyrrell, who disappeared from the mid-north coast last September.

Spedding was at home with his wife Margaret when detectives descended on his property on Wednesday.

Mrs Spedding was heard telling police "I've got nothing to say" before yelling at media to get off her property.
