Snake seized after attacking NSW owner

A snake owner has had a lucky escape after his 2.3m boa constrictor attempted to constrict him in his sleep.

Police seized the 2.3-metre snake from a home in Singleton, near Newcastle, on Tuesday after reports the 57-year-old owner was keeping the reptile in his home without a licence.

Police also say the snake may have eaten a small dog before it was confiscated.

The boa constrictor is due to be put down after National Parks and Wildlife officers deemed the snake a non-native species and posed a risk to local wildlife.

The snake was seized from a residence on Wentworth Avenue in Singleton on Tuesday.

The man is expected to be charged with possession of an exotic species without a licence.
