People in the NSW Snowy Mountains are being warned to hunker down with damaging winds and possible blizzards predicted for the region.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning on Tuesday, predicting gusts of more than 125km/h in alpine areas above 1900 metres.

The vigorous winds are likely to whip up snow at Thredbo and Charlotte Pass following some decent falls over winter.

The National Parks Service of NSW has recommended people considering back country travel postpone their plans until conditions improve.

The front is expected to cross the area on Tuesday evening and ease by Wednesday morning.
