The body of a six-year-old boy has been found after he was swept down the Murray River.

Police found the body after a two-day search at a campsite on Gunbower Island in Koondrook, Victoria, near the NSW border.

The boy's body was found on Monday afternoon about 7.5km north of the campsite.

He had been swimming with six other children on Saturday afternoon when they all started to drift downstream.

Four of the children managed to get themselves out of the water, but the other three began to struggle against the current.

Several adults jumped into the water and plucked two of the children out but couldn't find the six-year-old boy.

His family had been reportedly keeping a vigil beside the river.
