Reticulated python Monster weighs 53kg

The largest snake at the Australian Reptile Park has tipped the scales at 53 kilograms and extended 5.28 metres during her inaugural weigh-in and measure.

Park general manager Tim Faulkner says reticulated pythons are generally aggressive and capturing Monster for her check-up was tricky.

"Monster was in an awkward position which made it difficult for keepers to get her out," Mr Faulkner said in a statement on Tuesday.

Monster was weighed and measured to assess her overall health because, unlike mammals, reptiles show few outward signs of any illness.

"We're really happy with the result", Mr Faulkner said.

"It's a great place to start from with room for her to grow both in length and in weight."

The Australian Reptile Park believes Monster has the potential to one day be the longest snake in the country.

Reticulated pythons can live for 30 years in captivity and grow up to 10-metres long.
