NSW will get a glimpse of what the state will look like in 2056 when the latest Future State intergenerational report is released in Sydney.

The state's population is expected to rise by 50 per cent to more than 11 million people, but the report will also project demographics, workforce and housing trends for the next four decades.

"We want NSW to show the way in the future," Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian said.

"We owe it to the next generation to think deeply about the challenges the face us now and continue to lay the foundations for a strong future."

The intergenerational report, which is published every five years, will be released at a Committee for Economic Development of Australia event in Parramatta on May 26.
