Prince Harry visits amputee veteran

Students, hospital patients and former paratroopers have gathered to greet Prince Harry at Sydney's Macquarie University Hospital.

The prince is visiting the hospital to meet a British soldier who lost both his legs while on duty in the Middle East.

Former British paratrooper Eddie Cudd brought the royal a stubby-holder from the Parachute Regimental Association of NSW, of which he is president.

"He said 'everyone needs a stubby cooler' and then he said 'next time you're over in the UK, call into the palace and have a drink!'," Mr Cudd said.

Wheelchair-bound patient Noelene Stanton brought the Welsh flag when she found out the Prince of Wales was coming to her hospital.

"He came up and said to me 'Why have you got that flag?' and I said 'It's for you!'," she said.

Captain Wales was met by leading orthopaedic surgeon Munjed Al Muderis, who has performed groundbreaking surgery to allow Lieutenant Ali Spearing to get back on his feet after both his legs were blown off following an explosion in Afghanistan.

Lt Spearing has travelled from the UK to the clinic to be fitted with prosthetics in the new procedure that could see him jogging instead of struggling to walk.
