Prepare for a horror fire season in NSW

NSW has been warned to prepare for what could be a horror fire season as a result of dry and warm conditions during winter.

With about 2300 fires already burnt across the state since August, NSW Rural Fire Service commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons says a high fire danger can be expected this season.

"We have seen something like 2300 fires already, which is indicative of just how dry the landscape is and how easily the fires are starting and how quickly they are spreading," Mr Fitzsimmons told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday.

Firefighters are clinging onto "modest hope" of some spring rainfall, but Mr Fitzsimmons says the state would need a good drenching to help ease the conditions.

"The reality is we need a lot of rain to displace this moisture deficit across the landscape," he said.

Forested areas, the central west and the coastal fringe are all at high risk of bushfires.

Mr Fitzsimmons urged residents across the state, and particularly those living in high risk areas, to prepare their properties and talk with families about their bushfire survival plan.

"Research shows us that more than 90 per cent of all houses that burn down in fires catch alight through ember attack, so having a good prepared property increases its chances of survival ability, helps the fire fighters and helps the local community," he said.
