Police taking hard line on NSW firebugs

Firebugs have been warned they will face the full power of NSW law if they light fires during this week's forecast heatwave.

Temperatures are expected to hit the high 30s on Friday, prompting warnings from police and firefighters.

Detectives have activated Strike Force Tronto, the bushfire arson investigation unit ahead of the warm weather.

"As we all know, bushfires often have catastrophic effects, taking lives and destroying livelihoods," Detective Inspector Ian McNab said.

Police have called on the community to identify firebugs before they start lighting fires.

"If you have suspicions at all about someone who you believe could be involved in arson, don't leave it to chance. Make sure you contact police," he said.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has declared a total fire ban day for the Eastern, Southern and Northern Riverina areas.
