PM defends revealing details of Sydney terror suspects' video rant against 'blond people'

Prime Minister Tony Abbott is under fire for revealing the contents of a video connected to an alleged terrorist plot still to be aired in court.

There are also concerns Mr Abbott's description, under parliamentary privilege, of the recording as "monstrous extremism", could have legal consequences and potentially prejudice any trial.

"Kneeling before the death cult flag with a knife in his hand and a machete before him one of those arrested said this: `I swear to almighty Allah, we will carry out the first operation for the soldiers of the caliphate in Australia'," he told parliament during question time on Thursday.

"'I swear to almighty Allah, blond people, there is no room for blame between you and us. We only are you, stabbing the kidneys and striking the necks'."

Omar Al-Kutobi, 24, and Mohammad Kiad, 25, were arrested on Tuesday and charged with planning a terrorist act.

NSW Bar Association president Jane Needham SC said if the matter went to trial the court might find it "impossible" to empanel a jury unaffected by the comments.

"That could even mean the men would not receive a fair trial because the jury has already made up its mind," she told ABC Radio.

The trial could also be stayed, which has happened previously.

Mr Abbott's office defended his disclosures to parliament.

"The prime minister quoted the translation with the prior consent of the commissioner of the AFP, Andrew Colvin," a spokesman told AAP.

The video is likely to be used by prosecutors to fight an expected bail application, to be heard at Central Local Court in Sydney on March 16.
