Tears as slain NSW Indian woman honoured

Prabha Kumar's father has kissed the ground where his daughter's body was discovered after she was fatally stabbed in Sydney's west more than eight months ago.

As tears rolled down their eyes, Ms Kumar's parents unveiled a plaque in her honour at Westmead at the same spot where she was found lying on the footpath with slash and stab wounds to her neck.

Ms Kumar, 41, had been walking to her home on the night of March 7 and was chatting on the phone to her husband in India when she was stabbed.

Her mother Sarojini Shetty broke down on Sunday afternoon and could barely bring herself to lift the cover off a plaque installed to remember her daughter.

On his knees, father Mahabala Shetty kissed the ground underneath the plaque and paused.

His son Shanker Shetty said the family had been plagued with questions.

"They just want to know who did it and why?"

NSW Police have flown Ms Kumar's family, including daughter Meghana and husband Arun Kumar, to Australia to assist with the investigation and attend Sunday's memorial.

Husband Arun Kumar said he had felt helpless since his wife's death.

"It's very hard. I miss my wife a lot," he said.

"I don't want to go through all this.

"It shouldn't happen."

Ms Kumar, an IT consultant, left her husband and daughter in 2012 to move to Australia for a project with tech firm Mindtree.

She had planned to return to India in April.

Meghana, 11, penned a tribute to her mother shortly after her death, remembering her kindness and love.

"Mum was very nice, she never compared me with any other person," she wrote in a message translated by her father, Arun.

"Whatever I asked she got me. She (had) not made me cry until now."

NSW Police continue to investigate the murder.

"The investigation is intensive and detailed, and police are committed to identifying and arresting those responsible for Prabha's death," a spokeswoman said in a statement.
