Planning breach fines increase in NSW

Fines for breaching planning conditions in NSW will increase almost five times, with the maximum penalty up from $1.1 million to $5 million.

The fines, which Planning Minister Rob Stokes says are the highest in Australia, begin on Tuesday along with stronger powers for councils to investigate suspected breaches of conditions.

Breaches include actions such as unauthorised works, exceeding blasting limits for mines and quarries, conducting works out of approved hours and failing to submit compliance reports.

"Planning conditions are about ensuring community safety and neighbourhood amenity," Mr Stokes said.

The number of Planning Department compliance officers has also been doubled.

From Friday there will also be an increase in on-the-spot fines, up from $3,000 to $15,000.
