A stretch of highway on the NSW central coast has been plunged into chaos after two serious incidents within 50m of each other on Tuesday afternoon.

Police, paramedics and fire and rescue crews responded to a two-garbage truck crash on the Central Coast Highway about 2.20pm.

One of the truck drivers was trapped inside his vehicle before being freed and taken to Gosford Hospital with leg and pelvic injuries.

The other driver involved escaped serious injury.

At the same time, emergency crews were called to a separate incident about 50m away, where a ute was found on fire.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and discovered a body inside the vehicle.

Investigations suggest the death is not suspicious and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

Drivers have been warned to brace for delays as crews clear debris from the roadway.
