Man, 87, dies after car hits pole in NSW

An elderly man has died after his car smashed into a pole in Sydney's west.

The hatchback left Knox Road at Doonside about 11am on Tuesday, police said.

The 87-year-old driver was taken to Westmead Hospital but later died.

The incident followed another fatality on the state's Central Coast which claimed the life of a 60-year-old pedestrian.

The man was hit by a garbage truck while approaching the road on Emu Drive at San Remo on Tuesday morning.

The 53-year-old garbage truck driver was taken to hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
