Passenger killed in West Dapto car crash

One person has died and another has sustained minor injuries after a car crashed into a tree in the Wollongong suburb of Dapto.

Police say the vehicle was travelling east along Cleveland Road at West Dapto when the crash occurred, at around 2.10am.

The car was engulfed in fire following the impact.

Locals were able to free the driver, who was treated at the scene and later transported to Wollongong Hospital with minor injuries.

The passenger however was trapped and died at the scene.

Police are investigating.
