A Sydney man is behind bars accused of the attempted stabbing murder of a man outside a notorious inner city housing block.

Police found Dale Gibson lying badly injured in the driveway of the apartment block in Belvoir Street, in Surry Hills, late on Tuesday night.

The 43-year-old had suffered a number of stab wounds to his neck and was taken to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital.

A man arrested inside the complex, Michael Chappelow, has been charged with causing wounding or grievous bodily harm with intent to murder.

Chappelow, 43, fronted Central Local Court on Wednesday and is expected to remain in custody until his next court appearance in May.

A woman who lives in the same Belvoir Street unit as Chappelow, Rebecca Molloy, also appeared court on Wednesday, charged with affray and assaulting Mr Gibson.

Molloy, 44, was granted bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court later this month.
