Husband hits wife in tragic Sydney crash

An elderly man has accidentally run over his wife in a tragic car accident at their home in Sydney's southwest.

Police say the 85-year-old man had returned to his Mount Annan home from shopping and was reversing his car into the driveway when he accidentally put his foot on the accelerator on Thursday morning.

His 77-year-old wife had come out to greet her husband when she was hit.

"He basically went to put his foot on the brake when he got into the carport and accidentally pushed the accelerator," police Inspector Paul Fryer told AAP.

"The car took off and his wife had just walked out to greet him."

The car smashed through a shed and hit the elderly woman.

She suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene.

Her horrified husband has been taken to hospital suffering shock.

Insp Fryer confirmed the crash was being treated as a tragic accident.

The couple lived at the home with their daughter.

Police are still investigating a fatal crash when a car caught fire on the NSW Central Coast.

Emergency services found a body next to a car on the Pacific Highway at Lake Munmorah in the early hours on Thursday (AEST), police said.

The gender and age of the deceased are not yet known.
