Two-time Olympic gold medallist shooter Michael Diamond's chances of making the Rio Games could become clearer after he faces a NSW court on guns and drink driving charges.

The 44-year-old veteran of six Games is scheduled to front Raymond Terrace Local Court on Tuesday.

Police allegedly found a shotgun and 150 rounds of ammunition in his car at Nelson Bay, near Newcastle, on a Saturday night in late May.

It's alleged Diamond refused a roadside breath test but later returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.159.

Diamond has been charged with high-range drink-driving, not keeping a firearm safely and handling a firearm under the influence of alcohol.

Shortly after the alleged incident, Australian Olympic team boss Kitty Chiller said it was up to Shooting Australia to decide whether they still wanted to nominate Diamond.

He is facing competition for a spot on the team from 16-year-old shooter Mitchell Iles.
