NSW truck driver to stay behind bars

The driver of a semi-trailer charged over a deadly seven-vehicle crash on the Newell Highway will remain behind bars.

Robert Crockford, 50, did not apply for bail and it was formally refused at Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday after he was charged over the crash that killed a young couple north of Dubbo on January 16.

A man and a woman, aged 21 and 19, died when the semi-trailer ploughed into cars stopped at roadworks.

At least 10 others were injured, including a two-year-old girl, in the accident involving two trucks, four cars and a ute.

NSW Ambulance superintendent Kathy Golledge at the time described the crash as "absolute carnage".

Mr Crockford did not appear at court via video link when his matter arose because of medical reasons, his legal aid lawyer told the court.

He suffered leg fractures and suspected internal injuries. He was discharged from hospital on Friday evening and arrested by police.

He's been charged with 10 offences including two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death.

His lawyer told the court the 50-year-old intended to apply for bail when he faces Dubbo Local Court on Tuesday.
