NSW traffic warning as Opal free rides end

Sydney's road congestion will get worse as free end-of-week public transport for Opal card users comes to an end, the NSW Greens warn.

From Monday, commuters who make eight journeys in a week will be charged half price for the rest of the week's trips instead of getting them free, under changes recommended by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal.

Greens NSW transport spokeswoman Mehreen Faruqi said the "short-sighted revenue-raising exercise" would mean a fare increase for many commuters and result in less people using public transport, and more cars on the road.
