NSW SES commissioner Adam Dent has apologised to the people of the state after he was banned from driving for six months over a drink-driving charge.

Mr Dent was convicted of mid-range drink-driving in a Wollongong court on Thursday and told AAP he had made a mistake and was sorry.

"The clear message is you need a plan B ... I made a mistake. Never drink and drive," Mr Dent said on Friday.

He said he would not be standing down from his position in the SES and he was committed to serving the community.

Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott said Mr Dent still had his confidence.

"I have told him that he's an idiot for taking the risk and that I am disappointed," Mr Elliott said.

"He's admitted he has done the wrong thing and now he has to cop it on the chin."
