A NSW pilot program that shields child victims while they give evidence in sex abuse cases has been praised by researchers following a year of operation.

The project protects child victims of sexual assault from having to face their attackers in court, with special 'Children's Champions' also appointed to help them understand the questions of police and lawyers.

More than 760 complainants and witnesses have taken part in the program since March 2016 with close to 60 court evidence hearings pre-recorded.
