NSW has retained its status as the state with the lowest rate of unemployment in Australia.

The latest Bureau of Statistics figures, released on Thursday, show the state's jobless rate remained at 5.3 per cent in March.

The jobless rate has now been at or below the national average for 28 straight months, Treasurer Gladys Berejiklian says.

More than 126,000 jobs were also created in the state in the last year.

NSW has its "diversified and buoyant economy" to thank for the result, Ms Berejiklian said.

The state government's record spending on road, rail, hospitals and schools has also helped, she said.
