NSW prison officer on smuggling charges

A prison officer has been charged with smuggling steroids, tobacco and a mobile phone into a jail in western Sydney.

The 44-year-old man is alleged to have received payments in exchange for the items being brought into Silverwater jail.

Police last week found a number of contraband items during a search including 20 pouches of tobacco, 11 boxes of steroid tablets, 100 white tablets, 16 cigarette lighters, 7 boxes of rolling papers, a smart phone and charger.

The correctional officer was arrested on Wednesday and charged with three counts of introducing contraband into a correctional centre and two counts of agent corruptly receive benefit.

He has been granted bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on April 27.
