NSW premier's antique desk mistaken for junk, smashed with hammer

A 200-year-old desk used by every NSW premier since the early 1980s has been mistaken for junk and smashed up with a sledgehammer during recent NSW Parliament renovations.
Premier Mike Baird told The Daily Telegraph he hopes the desk can be restored.

The contractors who damaged the antique reportedly have agreed to foot the bill for its restoration.
Former premier Bob Carr, who inherited the desk from Neville Wran, said it would a sad loss otherwise.
"We haven’t got a lot of heritage items that can remind us of our state political history," he was quoted as saying.
Why contractors felt they had an open cheque to start beating up furniture simply because it looked old, I have no idea."
