NSW policeman recovering after shooting

The NSW police dog handler shot in a confrontation with a man at a Sydney hospital is recovering well and has thanked the community for their support.

The Police Dog Unit posted a message to Facebook on Wednesday saying Senior Constable Luke Warburton was receiving excellent care and making a recovery at Nepean Hospital.

Sen Const Warburton was critically injured in a scuffle with a man at the same hospital last Tuesday, when the man managed to wrestle the officer's gun away and shoot him in the leg.

"Luke and his family are very grateful for the overwhelming support and encouragement they have received from their friends, the police family and the community," the post reads.

Sen Const Warburton, 38, was the first police officer on scene following reports a 39-year-old man had held a pair of scissors to the throat of a female doctor at the hospital.

A hospital security officer was also shot with the same bullet that injured the dog handler, whose canine helped capture one of Australia's most wanted men, Malcolm Naden.

Accompanying the post were images of Sen Const Warburton and his two dogs T-bone and Chuck.

Chuck brought Naden to heel in 2012, biting the accused murderer on the arm as he emerged from his Hunter Valley hideaway in the dead of night.

Speaking after a visit to the hospital last week, NSW Police Deputy Commissioner Catherine Burn said Sen Const Warburton was missing his dogs.

"I don't think they're going to let the dogs in to see him in intensive care, but that's one of the things he said he's very much missing at the moment," Ms Burn told reporters.

The 39-year-old man remains in police custody over the shooting.
