NSW police demand training to take down lone wolf 'active shooters'

The NSW police union has demanded every officer be trained to take down "active shooter" terrorists on the street.

The Police Association of NSW has lodged a submission of requests ahead of the March 28 state election, detailing shortcomings in the ability of frontline police to deal with "lone wolf" terror attacks, Fairfax Media reports.

It wants an aggressive US-style model of police that allows first responders — usually general-duties officers — to take on shooters immediately rather than waste crucial minutes waiting for specialist units to arrive.

To this end, the Police Association is calling on the winner of the NSW election to build a new training facility and shooting range in Sydney for active-shooter training.

It also wants long-arm firearms in every police car, which would allow police to kill active shooters from further away than their Glock handguns.

"After what happened in Copenhagen on Sunday, not only should all these requests be fulfilled, they should have been fulfilled yesterday," said the union's president, Scott Weber, referring to the lone gunman behind two deadly attacks in the Danish capital.

"This is not a grab for extra money or power. The world has changed and not for the better. These are common-sense strategies that the troops are requesting from their leaders."
