A 60-year-old NSW man has died after he was attacked by three masked people in the bedroom of his Central Coast home during a home invasion.

Police believe three people with their faces covered and armed with baseball bats and knives broke into the Lake Macquarie home early on Monday and attacked the man in his bedroom.

The victim suffered a serious injury to his arm and was treated at the scene by paramedics. But he died at John Hunter Hospital a short time later.

The man's two brothers were home at the time but were not injured. Detectives are investigating if it was a targeted attack.

Commander Danny Sullivan told reporters the victim was known to police.

"There are a number of lines of inquiry we're following now," he said on Monday.

Supt Sullivan appealed for anyone in possession of CCTV or dashcam footage in the area to contact police.
