Singles looking for love this Valentine's Day have been warned to be wary of unscrupulous cupids lurking online.

Introduction agencies are poised to flood the market spruiking their services as the clock ticks down on February 14.

Unattached people have been told to think with their heads, not their hearts, as they set out on their quest for romance.

Would-be lovers may get caught in a wicked web of hidden costs, sneaky contracts and cancellation traps, NSW Fair Trading has warned.

The consumer watchdog received 28 complaints and 31 inquiries about dating agencies last year.

Commissioner Rod Stowe said people should steer clear of scammers and stick with reputable businesses, carefully read the fine print and avoid offering up credit card details to strangers.

"When things go wrong, contact the agency in the first instance, and if you are not satisfied call NSW Fair Trading," Mr Stowe said.
