NSW long weekend road toll down

Two motorcyclists were the only NSW road fatalities on the October long weekend - a dramatic improvement on last year's toll of seven deaths.

The motorcyclists died in separate crashes during Operation Slow Down which ran from midnight on Friday until midnight on Monday.

On Saturday a 29-year-old man died after crashing his motorcycle into the back of a cement truck in southwest Sydney.

The other victim, a 69-year-old man, also died on Saturday after his motorbike hit an emu in the NSW Riverina region.

"While every life lost on our roads is a tragedy, we are thankful we did not have a repeat of last year's horror where seven people died during the long weekend," assistant commissioner John Hartley said on Tuesday.

NSW police administered 203,645 breath tests which resulted in 270 people being charged with drink-driving while another 4,696 people were caught speeding.
