NSW launches prison mobile phone crackdown

All high security prisons in NSW are to be equipped with full-body scanners capable of detecting mobile phones even if they're switched off or smuggled in body cavities.

The NSW government is also keeping blanket phone-jamming in place at the maximum-security Lithgow Correctional Centre for another three years and hopes to roll out the technology at Goulburn Supermax.

"Phones are getting much smaller - they are literally car-key sized these days - and obviously the ingenuity with which people try to smuggle them into our facilities is also increasing," Corrective Services Commissioner Peter Severin said.
