NSW judge should reconsider position: MP

A NSW MP has called on a District Court judge to reconsider his position over the sentencing of confessed pedophile and former Bega Cheese boss Maurice van Ryn.

It comes after the Criminal Court of Appeal this month found Van Ryn's original seven-year sentence to be manifestly inadequate and "an affront to the administration of justice".

The three judge panel found Judge Clive Jeffreys did not clearly explain his verdict or indicate the seriousness of Van Ryn's crimes when he sentenced him over the abuse of nine children, some as young as eight, over an 11-year period.

Local member for Bega, Andrew Constance, said Judge Jeffreys needed to consider whether he was fit to keep his job after the court ruling.

"This sentence was a mere slap on the wrist and can only suggest the judge made a significant error of judgment," Mr Constance told state parliament on Tuesday.

"I'd suggest very clearly that Judge Jeffreys look within himself at what has occurred here as a result of his decision.

"He must surely consider his position as a result of this ruling."

Mr Constance said he would be seeking a judicial commission review of the decision.

"And I do hope that Judge Jeffreys will also consider his position," he said.

Van Ryn, 59, regularly abused his victims while at a swimming pool and persistently abused one teenage boy under the pretext of "helping him with computer games" from 2003 to 2014.

The Criminal Court of Appeal almost doubled his non-parole period to 13 years and six months earlier this month after it found Van Ryn's good character and attempts at rehabilitation did not outweigh the need for a strong sentence.

The former CEO of Bega Cheese will be eligible for parole in June 2028.
