A house in Wagga Wagga in the NSW Riverina has been severely damaged in a suspicious fire.

Firefighters were called after smoke was seen billowing from the Ashmont premises, just after 5.30pm on Tuesday, police said.

Authorities want to speak to a teenage boy described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander appearance, wearing black tracksuits pants and hooded top, who was seen riding a pushbike in the street at the time of the fire.

The house is one of two that was engulfed by flames on Tuesday night, after an elderly couple's home was completely destroyed at Yennora, in Sydney's west.

A 92-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman, were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and taken to Liverpool Hospital.
