NSW father cleared of murdering baby

A Sydney father has been found not guilty of murdering his eight-week-old daughter three years ago.

However, the NSW Supreme Court jury was discharged on Tuesday after failing to reach a verdict on the less serious charge of manslaughter.

The man, who can't be named for legal reasons, pleaded not guilty to murdering the premature newborn at a Regents Park home, in Sydney's west, in 2014.

The jury was told the baby, who weighed just 2.75 kilograms, died from blunt force craniospinal injury.

She had bruises around the eye, the cheek and the forehead, had brain injuries and a skull fracture, while all of her ribs at the front and back of her chest had also been injured - some more recently than others.

In his first police interview, the man said the baby's head injuries were caused by her older brother who hit her with a hairbrush.

But his barrister told the jury the man also told police "he accidentally dropped (the baby) on the floor which he now believes caused the fatal blow to her head".

Acting Justice Peter Hidden stood the case over for mention on September 11.
