NSW doctors' strike extends into second day with 3000 walking off the job

More than 3000 NSW doctors have walked off the job during the second day of strike action over pay and working conditions.

In total, 240 elective surgeries were cancelled today, and 1000 outpatient clinic appointments were postponed.

Some union members who had planned to strike today ended up working, after the health department flagged concerns.

"That has helped us ensure that the system, while not performing as well as it could be and should be, it is doing what it needs to do," Health Minister Ryan Park said.

Tomorrow will be the final day of the strike.

The union is seeking pay parity with other states, which could mean a pay increase of up to 30 per cent.

The state government has offered a pay increase of 10 per cent.

Emergency departments and intensive care units will be operating on public holiday levels of staffing across the strike days, the NSW branch of the doctors' union, the Australian Salaried Medical Officers Federation (ASMOF), previously advised.

Paramedics are also remaining on duty.

However, wait times for treatment for non-urgent injuries are expected to blow out.

People scheduled for elective surgery in the next three days are urged to double-check with their healthcare professionals if their procedures are still on track.
