NSW cops fine 13,000 drivers in fortnight

More than 13,000 people have been busted by NSW police in a fortnight as part of a major road safety operation.

Eight hundred motorists were caught without seatbelts, almost 9000 drivers clocked speeding, and more than 2000 fined for illegally using a mobile phone behind the wheel.

"It's very concerning that so many people are still taking these kinds of risks on the road - these decisions can and do result in people dying," NSW Centre for Road Safety executive director Bernard Carlon said.

There were 18 deaths on NSW roads during the operation, which was run by NSW Police and NSW Centre for Road Safety between August 8 and August 22.
